One morning I awoke before anyone in the house (very rare indeed) and began happily mixing up some pancake batter. I was pondering this and that and making a mental list of things to accomplish that day. I was so busy in my mental game that I didn't notice I was being watched.
No matter, leave it to the child to notice. My then 4 yr old came out of his bedroom sleepily rubbing his eyes and said casually, "Hey Mom, I think that doe wants a pancake!" Then he chuckled. I spun around to see a GIANT doe standing on our back steps with her head cocked to the side as she watched me mix with what appeared to be great curiosity. I tried to offer her a pancake but she decided she'd rather run back to her group. :)
After 2 1/2 years of living in the rural plains I understand why they call this area "God's country". I hope and pray when we become busy in city life that I am able to keep all the "important" things I have to do in perspective and remember to not take things so seriously.

OH Melrose, this post makes me unspeakably sad for some reason...
as a country girl myself (at least now,) I completely understand how the peace of nature can shock you into remembering God and what's important.
Surely, surely He will surprise you with green pastures of some sort, even in the city.
Praying for you.
That's the irony of this post :D I'm glad you discovered it. You see, they call it God's Country...but even in "God's country" I had to be called to attention by a 4 yr old to see it. :)
If there's one thing I've learned in my 2 1/2 years here it's that separating oneself from the "worldliness" of the city does not magically make one more pious.
When we first moved here I expected to find smiling women in aprons baking bread from scratch as they all watched each other's children. Instead what I found were women that all work full time jobs as their husbands work long hours on ranches. I was so disappointed! But I was looking for faith by my own perceived outward acts of righteousness instead of looking at the heart.
I've learned God's country is wherever two or three are gathered together in His name and I can't wait to move from one area of it to another. :)
That is so cool- that God has helped you to see these things.
(guess i'll have to trust Him to do the same with me if we ever move!)
It is so true though- HE is our home.
:D Amen sister.
